By Tina
We have six backyard chickens that are confined to a run that is approximately 5' x 20' (i.e., not free-range). I put cut up cabbage in the treat ball every morning, and it keeps them entertained for about 30-60 minutes until they get all the cabbage out. They really love it, and the cabbage fits well into the ball. The ball was smaller than I was expecting, but it works perfectly fine for the chickens.

By Chandler
My chickens actually live in what friends now call "Chicken Disneyland" because they are so well entertained...with old logs to jump on and hunt bugs out of, a sandbox to dig in and take dirt baths, adirondack chairs to climb up and sit on, stone benches to jump on...
I just took a tour of chicken coops in my town and noticed that no matter how luxurious a coop was that if chickens were confined to the coop and a small run, some of the hens I looked at were missing feathers from being picked on. Bored chickens are like bored kids...they wind up having to take out some energy in less positive ways. I actually have 3 roosters and have had far more than that when I was locating homes trying to save other roosters and my flock gets along beautifully--even my roosters don't fight each other (of course I work with them until they do as well; chickens can be trained...if I have a roo too aggressive, he gets picked up while I scold "No!" then hangs out with me and not the chickens for awhile. After just a few times; he corrects himself..just like a dog can be trained. I never get angry...I just train nicely and they really want my approval.)
But my biggest secret weapon is that my chickens are never bored. And they have room to play...lots of it.
Not everyone can do that, so providing entertainment even in small spaces is very important. I like to put together things they can climb but someone finally got clever and invented a chicken toy. This keeps their energy on something positive with a reward and all animals should have entertainment.
You can put all kinds of things inside like apple slices with the core removed (seeds are toxic), a head of cabbage is a favorite, cooked butternut squash (a natural pathogen killer) you name it...
If you hang this somewhere, hens can jump up and grab it and play time begins...
I know many get chickens as a "job"...the organic eggs...but if they aren't happy they aren't often good layers anyway. So keep the hens happy; even a dog confined to a crate all day would wind up depressed or aggressive...give them a bit of free range time so their natural instincts are fulfilled and at the very least give them time off for fun with this. That's a great paycheck.
(I rescue hens that are no longer laying; chickens can be amazing entertainment just being a happy chicken. Happy chickens are hysterical.)

This ball is SMALL. There is no head of anything fitting in it except maybe a brussell sprout. I think it would work for a small to medium caged bird or two. You are better off spending your money on a birdseed bell holder. (Found one in the shape of a bell and it fits lots of greens for the girls).
